About: Mónica Ágreda López
I am a postdoctoral researcher in volcanology and igneous petrology at the Department of Physics and Geology, University of Perugia. I obtained my BSc in Geology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogotá), followed by an MSc in Earth Sciences from the University of Geneva (Switzerland), where I specialized in igneous petrology and volcanology. I later completed my PhD at the University of Perugia with a dissertation entitled “Unravelling Volcanic Plumbing Systems Storage Conditions and Pre-Eruptive Dynamics through Coupling Classical Petrologic Investigations, Advanced Analytical Techniques, and Machine Learning.”
My research focuses on understanding magma plumbing systems and eruption dynamics by integrating petrology, geochemistry, thermobarometry, and machine-learning approaches to reconstruct magma storage, transport, and eruption processes. Together with Prof. Maurizio Petrelli, I co-manage the LA-ICP-MS laboratory, where I specialize in elemental mapping of geological materials, with a particular interest in the crystal cargo of volcanic eruptions.
