International Short Course on Application of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry to Earth Sciences – September, 2022

We are pleased to announce the 2022 edition of the International Short Course on “Application of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to Earth Sciences” that will be held in Perugia (Italy) on September 14-16, 2022. Frontal lessons and practicals on data reduction will be streamed in Microsoft Teams for the subscribed attendees. In presence attendees will also enjoy many practicals in the Lab!

This year edition will mainly focus focus on Imaging techniques with extensive training sessions on data reduction. Showcase applications of LA-ICP-MS in Earth Sciences will be also covered.

The course is strongly based on the practical use of LA-ICP-MS, for data acquisition, data reduction, and interpretation. Applicants will be trained in the “hands-on” operation equipment, using the LA-ICP-MS instruments available at the Petro-Volcanology Research Group @ University of Perugia.

Free Access to the LA-ICP-MS facility supported by PVRG research group
A selected number of applicants (2 or 3) will have the opportunity to analyze their data, free of charge (2 or 3 analytical sessions), in the six months following the short course. Selection will be based on the submission of a brief research proposal (max 2 A4 pages) stating: (a) the main focus of the research, (b) the role of LA-ICP-MS and, (c) the expected impact of the research. The attendees are asked to provide a brief oral presentation during the short course.

Scientific and Organizing Committee
Maurizio Petrelli (University of Perugia)
Teresa Ubide (University of Queensland, Australia)

Commercial Partners
Teledyne-Photon Machine

The course is organized by Maurizio Petrelli (Petro-Volcanology Research Group at Department of Physics and Geology, University of Perugia).

Location and Dates
Aula I, Dept. of Physics and Geology, Piazza University, 06123 – University of Perugia, Italy – September 14-16, 2021.

The workshop targets Ph.D. students and advanced Master students, as well as Postdoctoral candidates and senior scientists interested in learning LA-ICP-MS. A series of lectures will be provided on the application of LA-ICP-MS in Earth Sciences.

Registration (free of charge)
Participants are kindly requested to register for the workshop by sending an e-mail to Maurizio Petrelli (maurizio.petrelli@unipg.it). No registration fee is required. Max number of participants is 15 in presence (theory, practicals of data acquisition and data reduction), plus 30 that can attend online (theory and practicals of data reduction). The organization does not cover local expenses for the participants. As a consequence, the attendees are expected to handle travel, accommodation, and all local costs by their self.

The deadline for registration, grant request and proposals submission for the access to the LA-ICP-MS facility is August 25, 2022. We will stop accepting registrations once attained the maximum number of participants.

Covid-19 restrictions
All the activities will be held following the Covid-19 pandemic containment measures and requirements that will be active in Italy.
